Guitar Lessons Los Angeles

Why not study from the best guitar teachers in Los Angeles?

Red Pelican guitar teachers have music degrees from top conservatories and universities. In addition, they are working professionals who play in rock bands, orchestras, and compose music for film and video games.

Do you remember that strict, humorless guitar teacher you had as a kid? We didn’t hire him. Our teachers tend to be young and cool…if not in age, at heart. While our approach is modern, it is also comprehensive.

A typical guitar lesson will involve three things: technique, traditional studies, and a song project – often coming right off the student’s iPod

Hubie

Pop, Rock, Jazz, Folk, Funk, Blues, Country and more. . .

Hubie loves two things:  a) teaching guitar, and b) the name “Berkeley,” regardless of how it is spelled.  He is a graduate of both U.C. Berkeley, and Boston’s Berklee College of Music!  Now he resides in Los Angeles, where he is a busy guitar instructor, session guitarist and songwriter.  Hubie reached the finals of MTV’s “Making His Band” where he auditioned for P Diddy’s touring band.  He’s performed with artists such as Jason Mraz, Marsha Ambrosius (Floetry) and Stephen Perkins (Jane’s Addiction), and has had his music featured on VH1 and MTV.

What Red Pelican Music customers are saying about guitar lessons with Hubie:

“Received a one hour guitar lesson from Red Pelican as a gift. Best gift ever.  Spoke with Brian to set everything up. Brian was amazing, and just the nicest guy ever. . . .Based on my musical tastes and goals, he recommended one of his instructors, Hubie, for my session. Hubie was PERFECT for me. He was very knowledgeable and patient. Within that hour he was able to cover a lot of the basics. He helped give me the starter foundation that I’ve been looking for. Thank you Brian and Hubie! I highly recommend Red Pelican Music!”

Adam

rock, country, jazz and bluegrass

Adam hails from the Pelican State. While the coincidence is fun, rest assured, we hired him for his ridiculous musical chops and easy laid-back teaching style. A multi-instrumentalist, Adam teaches guitar, banjo and dobro, and is equally adept with rock, country, jazz and bluegrass styles.

Adam graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor’s Degree in music, also earning a degree in guitar performance from Hollywood’s Musicians Institute.

As a performer, Adam has toured with Rose’s Pawn Shop, and Jason Charles Miller, recently opening for country star, Gary Allan.

Adam’s favorite guitarists include Brent Mason, Tony Rice, Brian May, and John Scofield, an eclectic mix, befitting his diversity of stylistic interests. Adam’s banjo favorites include Scott Vestal, J.D. Crowe, Earl Scruggs, Bela Fleck, and Alison Brown; his dobro inspirations are Rob Ickes and Jerry Douglas.

Adam teaches:  Guitar Lessons, Banjo Lessons and Dobro Lessons

*Adam was a national merit scholar, and attributes this achievement to his diet of tomato and mayo sandwiches.

The Boston Globe - “Keppie’s songs marry soul and folk so gorgeously, you’ll cheer when they get stuckon endless repeat on the jukebox in your brain.”

Joe

Acoustic Guitar (nylon/steel string), Flamenco, Electric Guitar, Electric Bass

Joe is an accomplished guitarist and author based in Los Angeles, California.  Influenced by YES, Jeff Beck, Alan Holdsworth, John Mclaughlin, and many other rock, jazz and fusion artists, Joe toured extensively  in his native Brazil, and graduated from Boston’s Berklee College of Music in 2000.  Joe’s credits include projects with Vinnie Colaiuta, Dennis Chambers, Michael Breker, Barry Manilow, Chuck Loeb, Leann Rimes as well as producers Desmond Child (Kiss, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith) and John Shanks (Melissa Etheridge, Alanis Morissette, Fleetwood Mac, Celine Dion).

Joe has published two successful guitar books, “100 Ultimate Jazz Riffs for Guitar” and “Ultimate Latin Riffs” through  and is currently working on a series of new titles.

What Red Pelican Music customers are saying about guitar lessons with Joe:

“Miraculous results and fun.   As an older guitar student who had given up playing, I know what I’m talking about. I’ve taken lessons all my life, but never felt I was able to “play” the guitar – until Red Pelican’s Joe. His skill and knowledge are infectious. . .  He has brought me to a new level of comfort and proficiency that has been lacking in all my guitar lessons, from all my teachers, for all these years. My aural skills are finally developing at a terrific rate, as is my ability to let go of my fear of making mistakes. I just have fun – playing. He’s even taught me how to make my mistakes work! . . .  The time flies by, and I’ve “learned” so much I am amazed, in each and every lesson.”

Matt

Jazz, rock and fingerstyle, guitar and bass, Music software and recording

As a kid growing up in Pennsylvania, Matt began playing bass at the age of 8.  Once he discovered jazz guitar at the age of 13, there was no turning back.   Matt won a scholarship to Boston’s Berklee College of Music to study guitar performance, and honed a technique that is a dazzling mix of Joe Pass, Lenny Breau, and his own originality.  After graduating from Berklee, Matt moved to Los Angeles, where he works as a session guitar player, guitar instructor and composer.

Matt’s influences include Lenny Breau, Bill Evans, Tal Farlow, Kenny Barron, George Benson, Bill Frisell, and Jaco Pastorius.   While Matt’s specialty is jazz, he is a terrific rock guitarist and bassist as well, and enjoys teaching all levels and styles — from complete beginners to highly-advanced students.  Matt is equally with a pick or playing fingerstyle, and has a wry sense of humor.
