James - Saxophone teacher

James

James is a versatile saxophonist and researcher based in Los Angeles, specializing in Jazz and Gospel music. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Saxophone Performance with a focus on Jazz, as well as a degree in Cultural Anthropology, from California State University. James is passionate about the intersection of music and culture, studying music as a social practice and exploring cross-cultural collaborations.

In addition to Jazz and Gospel, James performs in a wide range of styles, including Mexican and Brazilian genres like Choro, Brega, Samba, Mariachi, and Banda, as well as RnB, Afrobeat, Reggae, Metal, and Afropunk. He arranges for medium-sized Jazz and RnB ensembles, such as Pacific Coast Soul, and is currently developing a Jazz-Mariachi fusion project with Mexican musicians.

James is also an active scholar, presenting and publishing research that bridges musicology and social sciences. His goal is to integrate Gospel music into Jazz education, sharing his deep knowledge of the musical traditions of the Historically Black Church. With a unique blend of performance, research, and passion for cultural exchange, James brings a dynamic approach to music education.
